Carol Baker
My art is not about representation—it is about journey, growth, expression, creativity and experimentation. I focus on the right side of my brain, letting my subconscious direct the flow of the work. My art is not so much about telling my story but rather allowing the viewer to create his or her own. My inspirations come from 20th century artists like Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollock, Franz Marc, Marc Chagall, Matisse and Miro. Like Pollock, I believe that art comes from within—the ultimate expression of the artist. I prefer to work in acrylics because of the faster drying time, although I rarely finish a piece in one sitting. I often use different media and materials I have found as well as layers and layers of paint. Textures are an integral part of my work. I delight in being surprised by what emerges. I would like the viewer to be equally delighted. My goal is to have the viewer want to return to view my works and discover something new each time he or she studies it.

I am inspired to create pieces that go beyond the photograph. It is an approach and artistic style that I like to describe as painting with photographs. With my camera, I capture images—varied tubes of paint and textures—and apply layer upon layer of “photo paint” on my canvas. For this show, I have selected pieces that explore the details, shapes and intricacies of flowers. There is an abundance of grace and beauty to be found in the curves of a petal and the stages of a bloom—small signatures of Creation. While some of the pieces in this show depict my subject as it was in camera, others have been altered, layered and daubed with elements of several photographs. Maura is the Creative Director of The Design Room, Inc., a local design-and-build firm. She holds degrees from George Mason University and lives with her husband and four children in Spotsylvania County.
