Focusing primarily, though not exclusively, on wildlife, Jen Callahan is a
versatile artist whose skills include drawing, watercolor and heavy base
acrylics.  She is known for her portraits of pets and wild animals because of
her ability to capture there inner personality on canvas.

Artist's Statement
I paint with watercolor and heavy base acrylics. In the past I enjoyed drawing and sold profitable portraits.  I also did commission work for a real estate company painting watercolor pictures as gifts for clients and showcasing some in model homes.  I like to experiment with different painting surfaces and styles.  I often keep the same theme throughout for a certain period of time.  My paintings reflect a fascination with animals and nature as I found my true love to paint animals.

I started to pursue my interest in art with lessons from Elaine Hahn (BA and MA in Art from the University of Missouri) in Occoquan, Virginia.  She
sparked my already strong interest in art and guided me throughout my high school years.  I continued taking art and drafting classes throughout high
school and college.  During the summer of my sophomore and junior year in high school I was accepted into the Student Virginia College Art Summer
Workshop.  After high school I attended NVCC in Alexandria, Virginia.  With focusing my studies I earned a Degree in CIS and Web Design.  Then life took
a turn to marriage.  I pursued my art interest when possible while raising twin boys and a daughter.  I took a dedicated pursuit back into my art career
in 2004 with some refresher courses on current techniques and new media application.  I have learned some great new techniques as well as approaches from the wonderful artists I have taken lessons from like Ed King, Hsi-Mei Yates and Nancie Harris.  I am also a current member of Johnny Johnson's Workshop and thank him for his guidance and encouragement to pursue my dream of an art career.

Art is a meaningful thing to me.  It aids in blocking out the world to focus only on my canvas and the colors and shapes I portray on to it.
