Regional Art Show
For the month of February the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts (FCCA) presents its first "Regional Art Show" of 2008. This all media, juried exhibit will be featured in the FCCA Frederick Gallery, 813 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, VA. The works of Brenda Russell and Darlene Wilkinson will be on display in the FCCA Members’ Gallery. The shows open 27 January and run through 1 March with a First Friday Opening Reception on 1 February from 6-8:30pm. The exhibitions are free and open to the public daily from 12-4pm (except Tuesdays). For more information contact FCCA at 540-373-5646.

The discussion "Exploring the N word: Who Can Really Use It?" will be held at 6 p.m. in Woodard Campus Center, Meeting Room 1.

UMW Celebrates Black History Month
A movie marathon featuring African-American actors will be held from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. in Woodard Campus Center, Wash Room.

UMW Great Lives Lecture

Mark Perry will speak on Eisenhower and Marshall. Perry is the author of the nonfiction Partners in Command: George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower in War and Peace. A writer, reporter and foreign policy analyst, he has contributed articles to numerous publications, including The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, The Los Angeles Times and New York Newsday.

Saturday, March 1st

Third Annual Benefit Gala
At the Riverside Dinner Theater. This year's event will be a semi-formal dinner and spectacular performance of "Thoroughly Modern Millie". The evening will begin with a pre-dinner silent auction in the Riverside lobby at 5:30 p.m. and will include many wonderful items from local artisans and businesses. Dinner and performance begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person, with 50% of all ticket sales going to directly support the Thurman Brisben Center and are tax deductible. Tickets can purchased by contacting the Riverside Dinner Theater at 540/370-4300 or the Thurman Brisben Center at 540/899-9853. TBC can now accept credit cards for ticket sales.

24th Annual Benefit Oyster Roast
Friendship Baptist Church will again host its annual oyster roast at White Oak equipment to benefit those in need in our community. 16 year old Justin Lee Whitaker of Stafford found out in June of 2006 that he had masses in his chest and neck,these were confirmed to be T-cell Lymphoma caner. He was treated with large doses of chemo and several admissions to the hospital. In August of 2007, Justin noticed a lump in his neck and was hospitalized for a reoccurrence of his cancer, and needed a bone marrow transplant. They have since found masses in his arms as well. Funds from this event will go to support Justin's medical costs not covered by insurance. The event begins at 3pm, 358 Kings Hwy.

Tuesday, March 4th

Cypriot Ambassador to visit Fred. Academy Andreas Kakouris, the Cypriot Ambassador to the United States, to discuss the Cypriot-Turkish Conflict and its relevance to United States foreign policy. His presentation, which is open to the public, will be held in the Academy's Donald and Susan Reed Theater at 10 a.m. This presentation was arranged by Fredericksburg Academy senior Lydia Pappas as part of her Senior Exhibit. Pappas's Senior Exhibit topic is Cypriot-Turkish conflict. Fredericksburg Academy, established in 1992, is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school serving more than 550 students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade.

FCS Annual Auction
Fredericksburg Christian Schools will host its Annual Auction starting with a Silent Auction at 5:30 p.m. and concluding with Dinner and a spirited Live Auction, courtesy of Nicholls Auction Company. This year the Auction will be held at Fredericksburg Christian Schools' High School Campus in Fredericksburg. Reservations are $35/person and are open to the general public. There will be hundreds of items to bid on from the practical to the exotic, home improvement, lasik surgery… to vacation getaways. For more information, please call 373-5355.

Local Benefit for "Locks of Love"
Any person who has at least ten inches of hair to donate will receive a FREE cut and style from Lisa G. Salon. 1:00 - 4:00 pm at Lisa G Salon, 800 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia. Your hair will be donated to Locks of Love and you can get a new style while helping a child who is suffering with long term hair loss. There will be food and drinks donated by Sammy T's and prizes offered to the 3 longest pony-tails, the 2 thickest pony-tails, the youngest donor, and the oldest donor. Prizes are provided by The Griffin, Simply Lilly, Fudge Factory, A Place in Time, Jabberwocky, and Cards and Cones. Marine Corps Marathon-First Event
The first event in the new MCM Event Series, the Butler Relay, is now open to the general public at www.marinemarathon.com. The Butler Relay, a 10K two-person team race, will be held on March 29, beginning at 8:00 a.m., aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, in Quantico, VA. Virginia Icon 2008 Talent Competition
For talented middle and high school students at 2 pm at the Alden Theater at the Mclean Community Center. Are you tomorrow's next big star?? Judges are professional musicians, producers and talent agents! Finalists receive a DVD of the Program. Winners receive cash prizes! The winner gets free studio time! 18th Annual Mother's Day Rod Run
The Fredericksburg Street Rods present the 18th Annual Mother's Day Rod Run at Walker Grant Middle School located on Route 1 next to Purvis Ford in Fredericksburg, VA. The show runs from 9 AM to 3 PM. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Walker Grant Middle School's Special Education Program. Pre-register before May 1st for a chance to win one of six $50 cash prizes. Dash plaques and goodie bags to the first 200, door prizes, adult games, long distance, hard luck and club participation awards. Top 25 and specialty trophies and a 50/50 drawing.
