I use imagery from childhood stories to create loose narratives that explore many issues of the adult world. On the surface the subject matter is humorous and is suggestive of an illustrative quality reminiscent of children's books. This sense of humor comes from a love of irony and the absurd. Using fairytales and children's playthings as imagery I explore gender roles, fears, vulnerability, alienation, and irrational expectations. Adults subconsciously cling to the narratives, roles, and attributes of the imaginary world that we as children utilized during play. These visual metaphors are not clear narratives, leaving room for the viewer's interpretation. Carol Coffman just completed her course work and had her thesis show for the Masters of Art Education Program at VCU in October, 2007.
