JUROR’S STATEMENT
It was a privilege reviewing the creative endeavors of the many talented people who submitted work for the Transitions exhibition hosted by the FCCA.  I spent most of a Saturday pondering the varied media presented and the relevance of the theme in regards to artists working today.  Thank you for this opportunity.

When a juried thematic exhibition is successful there are always many more submissions than space allows.  It is the juror's job to cull through the numerous possibilities and select the work which best fits the theme and will also make a compelling, interesting exhibition for the audience of artists and art lovers who will make time to view the resulting exhibition.  My personal inclination is to identify artwork, which combines superior technique with a unique voice or vision.  There is a great deal of technical facility in the world... but its the work which one remembers later, which balances execution with that sense of resonance that I am most interested in.  The artists listed below met these criteria:

Veronika Hart of Hendersonville, NC was awarded First Place because she challenges the viewer with her ambitious, whimsical paintings.  Her work pulled me into her magical world again and again.

Bro Halff of San Diego, CA won 2nd Place for his "Windy Day at Salt Pond Beach" because his work combines a love of 20th Century form and economy with personal narrative, fresh color and pattern.

Clairan Ferrono of Chicago, IL won 3rd Place for "Pond," a fiberwork because of its rich color and sensitivity to the organic texture and subtly of nature.

The following works won honorable mentions because their work exemplified the TRANSITIONS theme in a memorable context:

1. "
Going Home" mixed media 18.5"x18.5" by Dixie Erickson of Norman, OK

2. "Electrified #1" silver gelatin print 10"x9" by Robert Greene of Richmond, VA

3. "The Bathers" mixed media on paper 16"x23" by E. Gregory Siler of Raleigh, NC

4. "Cycle" Black & white silverprint 11"x10" by Stephanie Green of Baton Rouge, LA

5. "From Matter to Spirit #19" acrylic 25"x25" by Elizabeth Leal of Greensboro, NC

6. "Darwin Did It" mixed media 30"x40" by Cathy Herndon of Fredericksburg, VA
