A Fine Line
There were no specific guidelines for
artists regarding the theme of this exhibit. As such, each participant used
his or her own creativity to address the concept of “ A Fine Line”. The
criteria I used in making my selections included development of the theme,
mastery of medium, and originality.
1. DUSTY RAIN, Elvira Dimitri
The divisions of space by lines, stripes
and edges with its variance of values and color intensity throughout this warm
composition makes for a vibrance that is refreshing and exciting. There is a
wonderful mastery of the acrylic medium that makes this painting extremely
compelling.
2.
BUMPER CROP, Sarah
Bielski
The artist presents a slightly whimsical
and well thought out linear composition using a softened color scheme with
careful draftsmanship of crossing perspectives. The advancing monoliths of
turf are layered patterns of spirals which invite us to travel into this space
to find the meaning and destination of the white lined track marks. This well
titled image connotes automobiles and our limitations and directional rules
of the road and parking lot. The image of a water tower strategically placed
over one of the stacks of rolled grass supports and underlying theme of a
fine line - between nature and man.
3.
POLAR LANDSCAPE, William T.
Zuk
Through his use of patterns of fine lines
and meticulous detail, William Zuk has conceptualized the crystalline
structure of snow and ice and how how the repetition of this structure can be
transformed into undulating forms. The level of patience and attention to
detail is astounding in this magnificent work.
HONORABLE MENTION
ASPIRATIONS/CONTEMPLATION, Audrius Plioplys
Optical Art and Perceptual Abstraction, a
movement started in the 1960’s is very reminiscent in this piece. Audrius
Plioplys has chosen not to create a definitive illusion of total space but to
create a beautiful color field of scintillating fine lines.
AMBER SILENCE I, Michael
Smith
There is a compelling relationship
between tree and light. The tree takes on a dynamic presence with its
branches reaching toward the light. The dark mysterious figures advancing
toward the viewer create an intriguing interplay between the sharp detail of
the tree and the strong but unseen source of light. The artist exhibits a
creative depiction of nature’s fine lines of branches juxtaposed with the
incredible radiance of emanating light against the atmospheric darkness.
TRIANGULATION. Marti Belcher
The dynamic lines and breathtaking sense
of space are given presence by enlarging and printing this captivating photo
on canvas.
MEPHISTO’S FEAST,
Victoria Goro-Rapoport
Imagery, symbolism, and mystery combined
with great mastery of the art of printmaking make this an outstanding part of
this exhibition.
