FCCA 2010 April Regional Art Exhibit March 28th - April 30th, 2010 Frederick Gallery Joyce Jarrett Thor, juror JUROR’S STATEMENTby Juror: Joyce Thor of Jarrett-Thor Fine Arts Someone once said, “Looking is not as simple as it looks.” And while there are many aspects when considering works for acceptance into a juried show, from handling of subject matter to composition to color, value and execution and even signature and framing, I believe intuition can ultimately be a major deciding factor. I found myself looking at the art as if I were going to hang it in my gallery. But, in general, on any given day, my decision might have differed. I chose the pieces that were different and/or called out to me. There were 104 entries and I chose 50 to be in the show as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd for prizes and five honorable mentions. It was difficult to make the choices and the artists should be commended for the quality of their work. There were some pieces, however, that were not framed or matted well or the signature overwhelmed the painting or the wiring was not appropriate. My advice to the artists is to always pay attention to these details as you want your art to be presented the best that it can be from all aspects. While the prize pieces of art did not call out to me right away, as I studied the paintings and stepped back, they began to emerge. First place, “Summer Blast” is a mixed media by Kathleen Willingham. This piece called the loudest with its orange, teal, red & yellow colors (my personal favorites). The piece has varying shapes and lots of energy that makes a person feel happy and intrigued. Second place is a unique mixed media by Wendy Padgett titled, “Big Green & Pink Glam with Vintage Dress Sleeve.” This piece was very complex, using heat transfer, line and color. The composition was good and drew you into the art. The old pattern that was used, reminded me of “years gone by.” Third place might have been the most difficult choice as there were several lovely landscapes with almost equal calls to me. They did receive “honorable mention.” I finally chose, “Allegheny Summer Field” (oil on panel) by Jane Woodworth. The old barn with the warm light and the fields depicting summer reminded me of my childhood growing up on a farm. These happy memories definitely influenced this selection. The square panel and great composition were perfect for this painting. There were five “honorable mentions.” First, a lovely well done landscape in pastel by Kathy Waltermire. “Mattox Creek Morning” made me feel as if I was there. Secondly, “After the Rains” by Lynn Mehta gave such a peaceful feeling with the light on the water and lots of color in the trees. Thirdly, the marble mosaic, “Self Portrait in Green” by Eve Gray was stunning. Fourth, a photograph by Sandy Leigh Skipper called “Longest Icicle” was intriguing with an unexpected angle that got my attention. Lastly, “Harmony” by Whelan was chosen for its brilliant colors and sense of depth. It was a pleasure to be the juror for this show and I want to thank FCCA for giving me the opportunity. |
