Flowers like art are not a necessity for physical survival but like art they nourish the soul.   When it was decreed that I would paint flowers I wanted to consider what message they conveyed as subject matter.  I know my grandmother loved flowers because I have photos of flowers and vines growing around her log cabin.   Flowers brighten my mother’s life too.   Every spring around Mother’s Day my sister and I help her plant flowers in the boxes and pots on her deck.  I remember too, the hollyhocks she grew in Minnesota when I was a preschooler.   I have started a memorial garden with the flowering shrubs and bulbs from my mother-in-law's yard.   She loved flowers too.   This is my personal history of the women in my family sharing a love of flowers.

For me, flowers bring back memories of what they represent: home, love, and childhood.  Because their natural beauty reflects the glory of their creator they represent all that is good and positive in life.  I have renamed them to reflect their symbolism.
